What is the cornea?
Symptoms of corneal disorders
As a Corneal Specialist Dr. Kenneth Andronico, treats men and women of all ages for conditions such as dry eye and cornea disorders. With extensive knowledge and focused examination, he is able to obtain an accurate diagnosis that enables him to design a specific treatment plan.
The cornea is a dome-shaped structure that sits at the front of the eye. Its clear appearance may make it seem no more than a protective layer. More than a barrier against particles, germs and dirt, the cornea is a very organized grouping of proteins and cells all of which are important to vision and comfort.
The shape of the cornea, as well as its transparency, is integral to vision. Shape is what bends, or refracts, light as it enters the eye, determining the ability to focus on objects and various distances. If damage or disease occurs, light may be distorted as it enters the eye.
Corneal disease or corneal disorder is a term used to describe a group of conditions that primarily affect the cornea, such as degeneration, infection, or genetic disorder.
Typically, the cornea heals very quickly after injury. In some cases, healing is impeded and unpleasant symptoms occur. Some of the common symptoms include:
– Photophobia, which is an intense sensitivity to light, it may occur in conjunction with pain
– Pain may occur as a result in intra-ocular inflammation and infection
– Diminished visual acuity is common in corneal disorders because the cornea is responsible for two-thirds of the focusing power in the eye
– Redness may occur from inflammation
Systemic symptoms may also develop with direct symptoms in the eye. It is common to hear that a patient with a corneal disorder also experiences headaches, general fatigue, and frequent nausea.
If you experience the symptoms of corneal disease or any type of vision problem, you can benefit from a private consultation with Dr. Andronico. Through an in-depth consultation and assessment, the most accurate diagnosis can be reached. From there, treatment can be designed based on your needs.
