Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from dry eye syndrome often characterized by dry, itchy, burning eyes, sensitivity to light, difficulty focusing, or a scratching sensation like there is something caught in the eye. These symptoms can be both bothersome and painful for individuals. Because the causes of dry eyes can vary so greatly, we conduct a thorough consultation on every patient to determine the root cause and determine an appropriate treatment plan.

What is dry eye?

Dry eye is the result of a deficiency in tear production or the improper consistency of tears. Tears have the very important job of keeping the eye protected from particles and debris along with keeping it properly lubricated. Tears are essential to eye health and clear vision. When there is lack of proper moisture, it can result in dry eye. Dry eye can also be caused by inflammation on the surface of the eye or the lid. If dry eye is left unaddressed, it can cause scars on the cornea and potentially lead to some loss of vision. Those that suffer from dry eye may have difficulty staring at a computer screen or reading for long periods of time.

Treatment for Dry Eye

Treatment for dry eye is largely dependent on the cause and symptoms of the individual patient. For example, if dry eye is caused by a disease; such as lacrimal and meibomian gland dysfunction, they will need to be treated in order to address the dry eyes. For patients who suffer dry eye as a result of specific medications, there may be the option to switch to a different prescription that does not affect the eyes.

Other patients may benefit from an eye exfoliation which can help remove debris from the eyelid and lash line to reduce inflammation, improve vision, and eliminate the symptoms of dry eye.
