Most healthy people seldom give much thought to “automatic” body functions such as saliva production by our salivary glands in our mouths or tear production by our lacrimal tear glands located laterally above each eyeball that continuously supplies tear fluid that’s wiped across the surface of our eye each time we blink. Excess fluid drains through the tear ducts into the nose. We take for granted that our salivary glands constantly produce the fluids that keep our mouths moist and clean and that our tear glands will always produce a slow, steady flow of tears to lubricate our eyes to keep them comfortable and healthy. But, it is not always the case. It is when this production of saliva and tears is disrupted that we come to realize just how important a role these fluids play in our overall health and well-being.

Sjögren’s Syndrome, a chronic, slow progressive, inflammatory, autoimmune disorder that infiltrates the salivary and lacrimal (tear) glands, causing dry eyes and dry mouth. It has been estimated that up to 4 million Americans are afflicted with Sjögren’s Syndrome and that 1-2% of the population in the U.S. has been diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome. However, because the disorder may be difficult to diagnose, the incidence of the disease may be considerably higher. Sjögren’s Syndrome affects primarily women with symptoms most often beginning between the ages of 40-60, predominantly in peri/post-menopausal women, but are also seen in young women in their 20s and 30s.

Other symptoms of Sjögren’s Syndrome can include dry skin, a chronic cough, vaginal dryness, numbness in the arms and legs, feeling tired, muscle and joint pains, and thyroid problems. While the exact cause is unclear it is believed to involve a combination of genetics and environmental triggers such as exposure to a virus or bacteria. The inflammation that results progressively atrophies and damages the glands. Since the symptoms of this autoimmune disorder are very common and mostly observed from the age of 40 and above, it is often mistaken as age-related, thus ignored. However, some medications can also cause symptoms that are similar to those of Sjögren’s Syndrome. The combination of various tests, can help lead to the diagnosis of Sjögren’s Syndrome.
